Digital Byte 18: A Lesson Learned on the Dance Floor: What Salsa Dancing has to do with Business

June 6th, 2023

Recently, I tried salsa dancing.

I stepped onto the dance floor for the first time and was confronted with an internal battle: traditionally, in salsa dancing, the male partner leads.

As a woman who has moved across the world alone, visited new countries by myself, and started my own business with the support of other women, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. It felt unfamiliar and strange to give in to tradition and relinquish my leadership.

However, after a few minutes of following my dance partner, I felt a sense of accomplishment; I felt pride in my ability to constantly challenge traditions in OTHER aspects of my life.

I've built my company around breaking tradition. Instead of a traditional 9-5, we embrace flexible hours, promote offline time, and work entirely remote. The result has been a boost in productivity, innovation, and collaboration between all of us, no matter the distance that separates us.

By breaking with tradition and embracing change, I've opened doors to growth and success.

And next time I try salsa dancing, I'll suggest that I lead.

Stay inspired,

Sydney Addis
