Digital Byte 22: Ask and You Shall Receive: The Power of Asking For What You Want in Business

My childhood best friend has a unique talent for winning giveaways and contests. Her secret? She simply tries. While others might dismiss such chances as mere luck, she embraces the power of trying, taking the initiative to participate. As a result, she has often found herself on the receiving end of exciting prizes and experiences that most people only dream of.
One year, I was fortunate enough to receive 2 VIP Lollapalooza tickets from a friend of mine allowing me to go backstage and experience a whole new side to Lollapalooza. Of course, I gave my extra wristband to my childhood best friend. Together, we entered into a whole new territory. We were surrounded by an audience of notable festival-goers, comfy lounges to watch the concerts from, and even shorter drink lines. I was already in an “I can’t believe this is happening moment.” My best friend, as thankful as she was, didn’t want the experience to stop here for us. You see, there was a line to not just be backstage, but to be on stage. Of course, it was hours long if we were to get into it now, so I immediately wrote it off. My best friend, on the other hand, saw it as a challenge.
With her unwavering determination, my friend confidently approached the security at the front of the line and said "Thanks for holding our place while we went to the bathroom.” Surprisingly, the security guard smiled and, without hesitation, ushered us to the front of the line. I was in awe, witnessing firsthand how her audacious approach had instantly rewarded us with an extraordinary opportunity.
Though she might not have been the biggest Alt-J fan, her willingness to ask granted us a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We found ourselves merely feet away from the show on the stage the performance was taking place, immersing us in the raw energy of the band's performance. It was a moment of euphoria, and I couldn't help but feel immense gratitude for my friend's boldness. It was a lesson I will never forget.
This encounter had a profound effect on me, underscoring the significance of asking for what we want in life. We often hesitate, fearing rejection or appearing too forward, but my friend's actions demonstrated that sometimes, all it takes is a polite request to open doors that we never knew were possible.
As I reflect on that day at Lollapalooza, I am reminded of the importance of embracing the power of asking. Whether it's pursuing our passions, seeking new opportunities, or even just requesting a small favor, asking can lead us to the most unexpected and rewarding experiences. So, let us all be inspired by my friend's proactive and assertive attitude, knowing that when we ask for things, we take charge of our destiny and create opportunities for extraordinary moments and memories.
