Digital Byte 02: What It Means To Be A Mentor
January 18th, 2022
I recently posted a question in a “women in marketing” Facebook group asking if anyone wanted to be part of a small mentorship group. My reason for reaching out was that I often feel isolated when it comes to decision-making within my business. As a young business owner, never having worked in corporate America, I often feel like I am paving my own road. I know it would be impactful to talk with others who have been or are even in the same shoes as me. Problems always arise in business, but all these problems have been addressed by thousands before me.
I couldn’t believe the response that I got. The women eager to join were in the hundreds, and from all over the world. Just recently I had my first call with the women in my group. The question I posed at the beginning of the call has lingered in my mind since: What does it mean to be a mentor?
I’ve come to realize that mentorship comes in all shapes and forms. I now know that there aren’t specific qualifications that allow you to mentor someone, nor do you have to be a certain age or the highest in your field. Where you are now is already steps from where you started and there are thousands right behind you who could benefit from your experience.
While I will always continue to learn, I hope to impart some of my knowledge to you along the way.
I encourage you to always be a student and continue finding mentors in your life, but to also have the courage to become a mentor yourself. You just never know the impact you can have on someone, both personally and professionally.
