Digital Byte 43: Analysis Paralysis

June 4th, 2024

Recently, I found myself caught up in the cycle of planning, re-planning, and overplanning. It felt like I was making progress, but in reality, it was a huge waste of time.

This summer, I wanted to spend a few months in New York to be closer to college friends. I set out to find the perfect place at the best price, so I spent countless hours comparing different options on Airbnb, StreetEasy, and even Facebook Marketplace. A short-term rental in New York City isn’t cheap, and needing a dog-friendly place made choices even slimmer. I probably spent over 50 hours the last few months trying to lock in the perfect place at the best price. Not only did I spend all that time, but I also devoted a lot of mental energy to this situation, constantly stressing about it. Had I just booked a place that seemed like a good fit, even if it was higher than my intended budget, I would have saved myself time and energy.

As an entrepreneur, I know that the time I spent trying to get the best deal could have been better spent on sales for my company. Had I put 48 of those hours into the business, I’m sure I would have made back the difference and more.

Imagine you're a real estate professional looking to grow your business. You might spend weeks planning the perfect marketing strategy or analyzing every possible lead-generation tool. But by the time you make a decision, you notice other areas of your business falling behind. Better yet, you probably could have found a new client in that time on your own. Instead, making a decision that feels right in the moment and committing to it can drive growth more effectively than being stuck in overanalysis.

Take a step back and think about all the tasks you’ve worked on this past week. Were they all the best use of your time? What do you have coming up that you can decide on quickly and hope for the best? Remember, it’s better to use your time to deal with problems only when they arise than to spend your time stressing about potential ones.

Embrace the uncertainty, make your move, and shift your focus to what’s truly important—achieving your goals and enjoying the journey. The peace of mind and saved time are well worth it.

Stay Inspired,

Sydney Addis
