Digital Byte 09: Creating a Sense of Routine
March 2nd, 2022
As someone who runs a fully-remote marketing agency, my daily life can feel like it’s all over the place. While I am not someone who likes to have to same work day-to-day, sometimes I feel like I’m lacking a proper routine. I am always trying to get into the flow of a schedule that is completely up to me, but one big thing I’ve been neglecting is taking time out of my day to eat. I know that sounds silly but it's true. I often have a meeting after meeting or task after task and I forget. After months of this unhealthy routine, I decided to schedule in lunch. Yup.
Well… it worked.
Something else I’ve been neglecting? Working out. I mean, no one likes to do it, but once we do it's the best feeling in the world right? Well, guess how I am going to solve this? I’m going to schedule it into my calendar. I’ve realized that by having my schedule completely open with no bounds, I lose my sense of self.
Lately, I have also been using our task management system, ClickUp for personal tasks as well. For example, if in my workday I have 6 work tasks to do, I also include my personal ones. Being forced to check off “eat lunch,” “go to the eye doctor,” or “take a walk” has helped me prioritize my personal needs during business hours since it’s right in front of me on the screen.
Another thing that helps is scheduling activities into your personal life that you prioritize over working hours. For example, I take Spanish lessons every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and ceramics every Wednesday. These scheduled events help create healthy set times off during my frantic work schedule.
How have you built a stronger sense of routine during a boundless workweek?
