Digital Byte 08: The Difference Between Management & Leadership

February 22nd, 2022

What qualities would you consider a good leader to have?

If you were to ask me this a year ago I would have given you a very different answer.

I used to think being a good leader meant effectively training, giving feedback, and assigning and delegating tasks. These qualities worked for short-term group projects but more so fall under a management position. Management and leadership are two very different roles.

What I have come to learn is that good leadership encompasses so much more. Leadership means creating an environment where those around you feel inspired to thrive, where they feel their voices are heard, where they feel they have the tools they need to reach their highest potential. It is not a role where you dictate over your team giving order by order. That is management and it does not make for an effective team.

One of my favorite things I’ve introduced into the agency is Monday meetings where each week the team jumps on a call to discuss topics very similar to these weekly brew emails. In short, I have created a time with my team to discuss bigger life thoughts. The conversation provides a space to reflect on our values, how we incorporate them through our work, and within our lives. It enables the team to mindfully grow, both professionally and as people.

While I am still growing as a leader, I encourage you to as well. How can you lead a team rather than manage? Do you think your team feels heard and inspired?
