Digital Byte 04: How to Make Your Business Run Without You

January 25th, 2022

As an entrepreneur taking a day off can seem like the craziest thing to do. I am the definition of a workaholic. I enjoy work, I love what I do, and who I work with. It is often something I can do to help me decompress from the other stressors in my life. If you ask anyone on my team who has been around for a while, I bet most of them couldn’t recount more than 2-3 days last year where I took off. It is not easy to do but this is a huge goal of mine moving forward.

Rest can be the most productive thing you can ever do for your business. It gives you time to reflect, time to focus on your personal needs, and brings you back into work feeling better than ever. Yesterday I took off and I have to admit I was checking Slack messages and emails until 11:00 AM. As the day went on, work thoughts got quieter. I kept my computer in a different room and spent most of the day out of the house. By the time I got home, I felt zero urge to check my emails or Slack messages. While I definitely slept through my alarm this morning, I am coming back into work a healthier me. It is so important to prioritize yourself. Without you, especially in the early stages of your business, things don’t run.

This leads to my next thought… How do you bring your business to the point where it runs with or without you? There are three simple answers.

  1. Creating Systems

  2. Hiring + Training Well

  3. Growing Sustainably

Over the next three months, my focus will be on those three answers above. I will continue optimizing our systems to be as automated as possible, I will continue inspiring my team by giving them new opportunities to take on initiatives, and I will continue to grow our client list and products sustainably.

What actions will you take over these next few months to get your business to a point that it runs without you?

Here’s to more days off :)

In the News

  • Marketing on the Metaverse. Walmart is not only expanding into the metaverse but they’re also planning on using cryptocurrency and NFTs (non-fungible tokens). The metaverse is like a treasure box waiting to be opened, there are so many ways that this could impact businesses and Walmart is taking the leap as they attempt to change their business to be more involved in the digital world. Walmart's initial leap into the metaverse involves letting users try products virtually.

  • The Future of Cookies. The world of marketing is constantly changing and it’s important to stay up to date with these trends. Did you know that the future of cookies is changing? Google is planning a cookie-less future in 2023. With personalized messaging and targeting more emphasized than ever before, we as marketers will be challenged to meet consumer expectations with these changes in tracking. Through cookies, advertisers were able to track consumer behavior across platforms and provide them with relevant ads. The next year will be significant as Google phases out third-party cookies, leaving marketers to search for a new way to track consumers and target their ads. Our recommendation? Start using Google Analytics 4 as soon as possible to start collecting your historical data. Google Analytics 4 supports cookie AND cookieless tracking to understand user behavior.

  • New Year, New Media Strategies. As the new year has come, so have different media strategies. As the pandemic continues and has changed everyone’s life, people have changed their mindsets about life. Family and friend time is valued more than ever and people are starting to take control of their lives. As more people are working from home since the start of the pandemic, the number of new electronics and platforms being released to the public has increased dramatically. The digital power in our world is constantly being improved and becoming a part of our daily lives. Many companies are having to adjust to this new wave of technology and having to integrate it with their daily processes. With this shift, how will brands marketing tactics change to keep up with this change of thought processes?

Your Weekly Inspiration

There were 7 books that inspired Joe Coulombe to create his empire. Even if you haven’t heard of Joe Coulombe, you might have heard about his franchise, Trader Joe’s. He recounts that these 7 books inspired him to create a successful chain nationwide with a cult following and taught him the skills that are still appreciated and used today. These books ranged from philosophy to marketing and even included a book about military strategy! Who knew that World War I military strategy could play such a large role in the creation of this store? For example, after reading The Winning Performance, he learned to value success more than money.

You never know what sort of positive impact a book could have on your career. Set time into your workday to read something new. If you don’t know where to start, I would imagine Joe has a pretty great list.
