Digital Byte 15: Setting Boundaries

April 20th, 2022

When I first started the Inspiration Agency, I struggled to set healthy boundaries with my team and clients. I felt obligated to be online late to align better with clients’ time zones, I gave my number to clients and was available 24/7. While remote work gave me the flexibility I craved, the unstructured hours made me exhausted.

Being completely available all the time resulted in burnout, saying yes to more than I could chew, missing deadlines, and a whole lot of anxiety.

I’ve come a long way in boundary-setting since I first began, and it mostly came out of desperation to take a breath. Before you get to the tipping point, here are some tips I’ve learned that I think can help you as well in your journey to set healthy boundaries.

  1. Ask clients to prioritize the pile of tasks they’ve asked from you. Simply say “is this a priority or would you rather prioritize this other project?”

  2. If something isn’t urgent put it at the back of your to-do list but do let the client know you’ll get to it soon. “I will get this back to you by the end of next week.”

  3. Don’t give clients your number or a way to access you outside of working hours.

  4. Be clear about what you can take on.

  5. Set a limit on revisions and a final date to receive them.

  6. Setting boundaries will make your work better.
