Digital Byte 34: A Tip to Manage your Most Precious Commodity

A train running through an American city, symbolizing hard work, perfect for our tips on how to manage time better.

January 16th, 2024

Time is a precious commodity that often feels like it's slipping through our fingers. As a CEO, I have learned the hard way that not all tasks are equal, and spending endless hours on activities that might not contribute significantly to the company's growth can lead to burnout and inefficiency.

For years, I found myself trapped in the tasks of my business that, in hindsight, probably weren't as crucial as I believed them to be at the time. The turning point came when 2 years went by and my business hadn’t grown in the way I had hoped.

I then thought critically about how I spent my time. I was focusing on tasks that weren’t growing the business. They weren’t unimportant per se, but they were not as crucial as others that focused on growth. I’ve now learned, that the key to mastering time management is to focus on the tasks that truly matter, and I have one simple question that helps me identify what those tasks are.

Imagine you only have 10 hours a week to dedicate to your company. How would you spend that time?

This exercise forces you to prioritize and delegate, helping you identify the core activities that drive your business forward. It prompts you to assess the true value of each task and distinguish between what is essential and what can be handed off to others. By visualizing a limited time frame, you are compelled to make strategic decisions about where your time is best invested.

As a result, I found myself not just working smarter but growing the business in the ways I had hoped to.

Time management isn't about doing more; it's about doing what matters most. It's a shift from being busy for the sake of busyness to being productive with purpose.

So, the next time you find yourself drowning in tasks, take a step back and imagine that you only have 10 hours a week to dedicate to your company. What would you prioritize, and what would you delegate?
